Expanding Pharmaceutical Capacity through Smart Laboratory Design

At LTS, we design and deliver specialist laboratory facilities that enable pharmaceutical leaders to scale safely and effectively.

Aspen Pharmacare appointed LTS to lead the design and expansion of their Small Volume Parenterals (SVP) QC laboratories in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The multi-phase project includes the creation of a brand-new Microbiology lab (Phase 1, completed) and the upcoming expansion of the Chemistry lab (Phase 2, under construction).

The new facilities were designed with a process-driven approach — aligning regulatory compliance, operational flow, and future capacity into a high-performance environment for quality control.

Challenge Capacity Constraints in Critical QC Facilities The existing facilities were operating near maximum capacity.

The Microbiology and Chemistry departments required space, efficiency, and improved sample flow — but construction had to be phased to avoid downtime.

LTS was tasked with reimagining the space while preserving business continuity and GMP compliance.

Approach Phased Design Built on Precision and Integration Phase 1 involved designing a new Microbiology facility with full MEP integration, a new parking block, and delivery and waste handling routes — now completed and operational.

Phase 2 includes refurbishing and expanding the existing Chemistry lab, adding new change and locker rooms, and executing a seamless transition while the lab remains active.

LTS led a full multidisciplinary team, ensuring tight coordination from design through construction.
We conducted feasibility studies, led user workshops, and translated regulatory and operational needs into a phased facility design. 2/3
Result Increased Capacity with Zero Compromise on Operations Aspen now benefits from a purpose-built microbiology lab tied into existing sample flows — enabling higher throughput and improved control.

As Phase 2 progresses, the refurbished Chemistry space will provide significantly more capacity without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The phased approach and meticulous design coordination ensured GMP compliance, minimal downtime, and a scalable future.

The new SVP Microbiology lab is now live, and Chemistry expansion is underway. 3/3
